Despite a stable global macroeconomic climate and considerable demand pressures from metals-intensive industries, the European mining sector faces a number of critical challenges. Global economic growth has brought with it a greater dependence on precious and speciality metals around which there are serious questions about the sustainability of current supplies. In the opening session, we will hear contributions from senior government officials from Bulgaria on how the Balkans are facing up to these global issues, and from European thought-leaders on how the European raw materials sector is increasingly embracing innovation and a focus on sustainability to ensure its competitive advantage. The session will also give an overview of the pricing trends and identify where bottlenecks in the battery metals industry are likely to be and how these could be overcome.

Although there have recently been significant upticks on global expenditure on exploration, it is recognised that in many European markets the current historically low levels of exploration poses a level of risk to the future sustainability of mining operations. A number of industry sources have pointed out that this lack of investment in exploration will eventually catch up and impact negatively on the supply of sites available for exploitation. In this session, we will hear from exploration companies working in the region to address this shortfall, and will hear how pro-exploration legislative action; contemporary exploration technology; and, the use of legacy data are helping regional prospectors gain a competitive advantage.

Short history of the Museum
In 1889 the Austrian architect Emil von Förster won an international competition for a mineral bath with a hotel and started the construction of the building. Four years later the building of the hotel was suspended due to a shortage of funds. In 1904 the conceptual design of the complex in its present form was clarified by the architects Petko Momchilov and Friedrich Grünanger.
The small bathroom building was officially opened in 1908, and the large one – with two swimming pools, family baths, Roman baths – on May 13th 1913. A year later in 1914 a water healing treatment institute with special water facilities was opened in the northern wing of the bath. The facilities were supplied with water from the mineral springs beneath the building. During the bombing of Sofia (1944) the small bathroom building was broken down, and parts of the large one were seriously affected.
After the Second World War, the large bathroom was restored and officially proclaimed as monument of culture of local importance. Due to depreciation in 1986, the building was closed for visitors and completely abandoned after 1989. In the mid-1990’s, the building was gradually restored. From 2015, it houses the Museum of History of Sofia.

Development of critical metals such as Lithium, Cobalt and Copper in Europe is drawing the attention of global investors. As financing levels for mining projects continue to increase, we look at the range of financing source and options available to mining sector companies of different sizes, and hear from specific players currently interested in funding projects in Europe. Following the Forum’s overall focus on sustainability, we will also hear from speakers on the cashflow challenges facing growing companies, and learn about, in absence of institutional financing, how companies are increasingly turning to their own balance sheets to fund their development. We will also examine the latest practices in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) in measuring the sustainability and ethical impact of an investment to better determine the future financial performance of mining companies (return and risk). The session will also consider the implications of differing reporting standards for companies approaching listing and regulation.

In this session, we will be examining the development of responsible mining technologies to reduce the environmental footprint of mining and post-mining activities. Critical to the planning for mining operations is ensuring appropriate management of the post-operations mine site, and land reuse provisions. Increasing regulatory focus on environmental issues however is affecting not only mining operations, but also demand for particular minerals and metals. There is an onus on the mining and metals industry working in conjunction with governments and manufacturers to find solutions to address these challenges.

Rapid and intelligent adoption of cost-effective technological innovations is one of the key means that exploration companies have of making breakthrough discoveries in an at times crowded exploration space. Companies are also looking to ensure that the technologies adopted allow for a decrease in the environmental footprint of their resource exploration and drilling programmes. Among many other applications, the latest technologies are allowing better access to mine sites, decreasing the invasiveness of subsoil data collection, providing more advanced geochemical analysis, and automating the process of estimating resource extraction costs and values.

Ellatzite-Med is one of the largest copper mining companies in Bulgaria, dealing mainly with extraction and processing of copper porphyry gold-bearing ores from Ellatzite deposit. The extracted ore is transported from Ellatzite open-pit mine located near the town of Etropole to the Flotation Complex in Mirkovo village on a 6.5 km underground rubber-belt conveyor line which was driven beneath Stara Planina Mountain.
It is a structural-determinant enterprise in Bulgarian economy and one of the largest investors and taxpayers. The company employs about 1,770 staff, most of whom are local residents.
Over the years, various programmes have been elaborated for ensuring the long-term operation of the company and for improving the financial and technical parameters of copper ore extraction and processing. Today Ellatzite mine ranks among the top copper-producing companies with the largest production capacities in Europe.
